Abstract
1287884 Internal shoe drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 20 Nov 1969 [15 Oct 1968] 48763/68 Heading F2E An internal shoe drum brake includes shoe actuating means 6 for expanding the brake shoes and a strut assembly operatively engaged at its opposite ends with the respective brake shoes 2, 3 and acting as a stop for the brake shoes in the unoperated condition of the brake. The strut assembly extends and retracts to follow up the movement of the brake shoes 2, 3 and incorporates an adjuster for adjusting the brake shoe clearance. The strut comprises a socket member 8 having a spindle 12 slidably and rotatably mounted therein and biased away therefrom, the spindle 12 being screw threadedly engaged in a further socket member 9 the adjuster being arranged to effect relative rotation of the spindle 12 and socket member 9 in response to a predetermined minimum extension of the strut assembly during brake operation. The member 8 abuts the brake shoe 2 such that the brake shoes 2, 3 may also be actuated through the strut by means of a floating two part lever 20, 21. In operation the two parts 20, 21 of the lever are locked together by a pin 22 or by an adjustable means, unlocking of the two parts being effected prior to dismantling of the brake. The adjuster comprises a spring 18 interposed between the member 8 and a sleeve 14 rotatably mounted on the spindle, the spring carrying a pawl 19 which co-operates with a ratchet wheel 16 fixed to the spindle 12. In the brakes off condition the spring 18 is under compression and bowed but on actuation of the brakes by the means 6 the strut assembly extends allowing the spring 18 to straighten and the pawl 19 to drive the ratchet wheel 16 in rotation. If the brake shoes require adjustment, on return of the brake to its inoperative condition, the pawl 19 rides over a tooth of the ratchet wheel 16. In a further embodiment rotation of the ratchet wheel takes place during the release of the brakes (Fig. 3, not shown). Devices including a pawl and ratchet and/or a clutch spring may be used to prevent shortening of the strut assembly.
