Abstract

1,095,043. Internal shoe-drum brakes. GIRLING Ltd. March 18, 1965 [April 6, 1964], No. 5072/64. Heading F2E. In an internal shoe-drum brake the brake shoes 10, 11 are applied by a lever 24 pivotally mounted by a pin 25 on one shoe 11 and acting on the other shoe 10 through a strut, formed by a screw-threaded portion 31 and a sleeve portion 28, of which the effective length is adjustable and which is adjusted automatically when the angular movement of the lever 24 is actuated by a flexible cable 26 and exceeds a predetermined value owing to wear of the shoe linings. The lever 24 carries a resilient finger 35 which cooperates with ratchet teeth on a nut 33 in screw-threaded engagement with a screwthreaded portion 31 of the strut such that if the finger 35 engages the radial face of a ratchet tooth before it reaches the end of its travel the nut 33 would be rotated angularly to adjust the effective length of the struts sufficient to take up the wear of the linings. When the brake is released the finger will ride over the ratchet teeth. In an alternative embodiment (not shown) the adjustment may be effected on the return movement of the lever, the finger riding over the ratchet teeth on the applying movement. In a further arrangement (not shown) the ratchet teeth may be formed on the periphery of an internally screw-threaded sleeve receiving the inner ends of two aligned, oppositely screw-threaded rods forming the strut.
