Abstract
1,069,135. Disc brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Sept. 15, 1965 [Nov. 12, 1964], No. 46141/64. Heading F2E. In an automatic wear adjusting device for a disc brake of the kind comprising an internally threaded sleeve arranged within an hydraulic actuating cylinder 3 and threadedly engaging a rod 10 secured to pad-applying piston 4, the sleeve is engaged by the inner end 8 of a push rod 5 which is movable axially within a sealed bore in the end wall of the cylinder by manual applying means 24-27, and there is associated with the sleeve pawl and ratchet mechanism for automatically increasing .the length of the assembly. For this purpose the sleeve carries a ratchet wheel 11 which is engaged by a toothed ring 14 (which may, as shown, have only four teeth) rotatable about the sleeve, such rotation being effected by a pawl 18 which is pivoted at 19 to the end 8 of the push rod and has a rounded end 17 engaged in a slot cut in the periphery of the ring 14. The pawl also has a laterally extending portion including an abutment 22 which is engaged by one end 21 of a leaf spring to retain this portion normally in contact with the cylinder rear wall, the other end 23 of the leaf spring being arranged to restrain rotation of the sleeve, so that, in operation, axial movement of the push rod 5 by the manual applying means causes the pawl to pivot and rotate the ring 14. If wear is excessive the ring 14 engages a fresh set of teeth on the ratchet wheel 11, so that on subsequent release of the brake adjustment is effected. A light spring 15 maintains the ring 14 in engagement with ratchet wheel 11. The effect of the spring 15 may be overcome, so far as release of the associated brake pad or pads is concerned, by a washertype spring (31) (Fig. 2, not shown) inserted between the outer face of the cylinder rear wall and a flange formed on a retaining cap 29 for the member 27 of the applying means. In fluid-pressure application of the brake the push rod 5 remains stationary in either case, so that no adjustment is effected.
