Abstract

998,582. Brake automatic adjusters. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. Oct. 23, 1961 [Nov. 2, 1960], No. 37714/60. Heading F2E. An automatic adjusting device for telescopic members 1, 2, comprises a friction member 6 interposed between a piston 1 and a pin 4, the friction member 6 being movable axially relative to both of them, to and from a retracted position. The friction member 6 engages the piston 1 and has its axial movement, relative to the pin 4, in both directions, limited by stops 5, 8, resilient means 9 acting on member 6 to urge it against one of the stops 5 limiting its axial movement to the retracted position. The pin 4 is secured in the closed end of a cylinder 2 and possesses a reduced portion around which the friction member 6 in the form of a spring is mounted. A spring washer 9 comprises the resilient means. When wear has taken place in a disc brake, actuated by the telescopic members, then in application of the brake the friction member 6 moves with piston 1 against washer 9 until the reaction of washer 9 overcomes the frictional force between member 6 and piston 1. On retraction of piston 1, the friction member 6 remains in its adjusted position. In further embodiments described, the friction member may comprise an inwardlyflanged sleeve, Figs. 2, 4 (not shown), or an annular block, Fig. 3 (not shown), the resilient means including a helical compression spring.
