Abstract

812,003. Automatic brake - adjusting mechanism. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Sept. 25, 1956 [Oct. 25, 1955], No. 29937/55. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] In a wear adjustment mechanism for vehicle brakes, clutches and the like of the kind comprising a rotatable member and a friction member axially movable to engage the rotatable member, a pin has one end slidably associated with an applying mechanism and its other end slidably movable between two fixed stops such that the pin is engaged by a slidable stop adapted to move relatively to the pin, in the form of a close coiled helical spring engaging the pin with a predetermined degree of interference, such that on continued movement of the mechanism in excess of a restricted distance defined by the fixed stops when the mechanism is operated, compensates for wear of the friction member. In the " spot type " disc brake illustrated, a pin 19 is provided with a head 18 housed between two fixed stops dehned by a cap member 21 and a recess in tne cylinder head 15 respectively. The shank of the pin 19 extends into a recess 23 in the piston 11 and is frictionally gripped with a predetermined degree of interference by a close coiled helical spring 25 fluid pressure in recess 13 forces piston 11 axially in bore 16 of cylinder 12 and forces friction pad into frictional engagement with a rotatable brake disc 1. During this movement the pin 19 is carried with the piston by the interference caused by the helical spring 25 and the head 18 of the pin is drawn axially of the space 22 in the recess 17 to compress Belleville spring 20. Should friction pad wear cause the spring 20 to be fully compressed, continued axial movement of the piston 11 towards the disc 1 will cause helical spring 25 to be drawn axially along the pin to compensate for wear of the friction pad. Upon release of the fluid pressure from the space 13 the resilient annulus 10 which also acts as a dust seal will retract the pad 2 from the disc 1 and the piston 11 will move axially in the bore 16, carrying with it the pin 19, until the head 18 of the pin abuts the base of the recess 17 and the friction pad 2 will be withdrawn from the disc by a distance only equalling the axial depth of the space 22. A further embodiment is disclosed in the Provisional Specification. Specifications 738,034 and 747,972 are referred to.
