Abstract

747,972. Automatic adjusting devices for brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. June 11, 1954 [July 21, 1953], No. 20148/53. Class 103 (1). The invention concerns a modification to the invention described in Specification 738,034 which describes means for automatically adjusting brakes to compensate for wear of the friction members and also of means for moving the friction members a predetermined distance away from the rotatable braking member after each application of the brakes. In place of the solid pins secured at one end to backing plates, as described in the above Specification, elasticallydeformable pins 6 of cross-section illustrated in either Fig. 4 or Fig. 5 are secured at one end to backing plates 4 which each carry a pad of friction material 2 to engage the side surfaces of an annular disc. On each pin 6 is frictionally fitted a cylindrical sleeve 7 provided with an annular flange 8 which is normally seated on the shoulder 12 of the distance piece 11 and is capable of limited movement between the shoulder 12 and the annular member 10 seated on the step of the hole 9 which lies parallel to the cylinder of the fluid-pressure piston and cylinder mechanism. This limited movement represents the clearance of the friction pad 2 from the friction surface of the disc when the braking pressure is removed. Should friction pad wear take place, the braking pressure will cause the pins 6 to slip through the sleeves 7 until full frictional engagement is effected. On removal of the braking pressure, the springs 13 will retract the backing plates 4 and allow the pads 2 to effect the predetermined running clearance. Fig. 3 illustrates a further embodiment of the invention in which a sleeve 18 is located in frictional engagement with each of the elastically deformable pins 6 such that axial movement in one direction is limited by the step formed in the hole 9 and in the other direction by the end of a hollow plug 16 screwed into the end of each hole 9. Thus on application of the braking pressure, the piston of each mechanism moves towards the disc 1 against the tension of the return spring to effect frictional engagement between the pads 2 and the disc 1. If the sleeve 18 abuts the step of the hole 9 before full frictional engagement is effected (due to wear of the pad) then the braking pressure will cause the pins 6 to slip through the sleeves until full frictional engagement is effected. When the braking pressure is removed, the spring 15 will retract the assembly until the sleeves 18 abut the ends of the plugs 16 thereby effecting the predetermined running clearance. The device may be adapted with suitable modification to a drum brake. Specification 688,382 also is referred to.
