Abstract

765,823. Automatic adjustment devices for brakes. ZAPADOCESKE AUTODRUZSTVO. Jan. 31, 1955, No. 2849/55. Class 103 (1). In an automatic adjustment mechanism for adjusting the clearance of brake shoes, the adjusting means, retained by friction, are mounted in the wheel brake cylinder and are adapted to be engaged by a shoulder on working pistons in such a way that movement in an axial direction through a distance equal to the clearance necessary for the disengagement of the brake shoes from the brake drum is possible between the working pistons and the frictional adjusting means, the latter being capable of being displaced solely by the force produced by the pressure of liquid during the braking operation. In the embodiment illustrated the invention is applied to an internal shoe drum brake, the working pistons 4 of the wheel brake cylinder 1 are each provided with a projection 6 over which a split friction ring 7 is fitted and on which is screwed a cylindrical nut 9 having a flange or head 10. The split friction ring 7 has a slightly larger diameter than the bore of the cylinder 1 such that it is provided with frictional resistance in the bore. In the operative position of the brake illustrated in Fig. 1, the working pistons 4 are forced apart by hydraulic pressure supplied via aperture 2 from the master cylinder, and the flange 10 of the cylindrical nut 9 secured to the piston 4 abuts the recessed portion of the friction ring 7 to move the friction ring if necessary to accommodate any wear of the friction linings. During this braking operation, a clearance 16 is present at the outer side of the rings 7 and it is this clearance which determines the size of the clearance between the friction linings and the brake drum. The force required for the displacement of the rings 7 must be somewhat greater than the retraction force of the spring 18. Fig. 2 illustrates the position of the parts of the wheel brake cylinder when the brake shoes are released. Alternative constructions are described but not illustrated in the Specification, e.g. the friction ring 7 may be directly mounted in a groove in the piston. Specification 726,548 is referred to.
