Abstract
738,034. Automatic adjusting devices for brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., and BUTLER, H. J. Jan. 19, 1954 [Feb. 28, 1953], No. 5672/53. Class 103 (1). In a brake device to automatically compensate for wear of the friction members, two pins 28 extend axially one each side of the piston and cylinder mechanism (12, 6) in the "spot-type" disc brake illustrated; each pin has one end associated with a friction pad 8 and is slidably fitted through a sleeve 17. One end of the sleeve is longitudinally slotted 20 and is provided with a part-conical end 19 and is threaded adjacent said end. A nut 26 having a partconical end of the sleeve is screwed onto the sleeve, so that rotation of the nut on the sleeve tightens the slotted part of the sleeve about the pin until a predetermined degree of interference has been obtained. As the friction pads 8 and backing plates 9 are moved towards the disc 1 they move the pins 28 secured thereto in the same direction and also the sleeves 17 secured to each pin. Each pin moves until the shoulder 18 thereon contacts the annular stop 16; the helical spring 23 compressing during the process. On release of the braking pressure the spring 23 retracts the assembly 17, 28, 26, 9 and 8 until the shoulder 18 on the sleeve 17 is again contacting the flange 22 of the distance piece 21. The friction pads will then be spaced away from the disc by the amount of clearance 25 between the shoulder 18 and the stop 16. As the friction pads wear the braking force will overcome the resistance between the pin and the sleeve and draw the pin through the sleeve to automatically compensate for wear of the pads. On the braking load being removed, the pads will again retract their predetermined distance 25, as explained above. The device may be applied to any suitable type of disc brake and with suitable modifications it will also be suitable for drum brakes. The Provisional Specification describes the invention applied to an alternative form of vehicle disc brake. Specification 688,382 is referred to.
