Abstract
1,269,027. Internal shoe drum brakes. SOC. ANON D.B.A. 2 July, 1970 [18 July, 1969], No. 32170/70. Heading F2E. An internal shoe drum brake has wheel cylinders 16 urging one end of shoes 26, 28 towards a drum 8, the other end of the shoes being pivotably mounted on a fixed support 10 by means of pins 34 which pass through slots 22 in the cylinder casing and through arms 14 of support 10. Fluid actuated pistons 18 within cylinders 16 have extensions 20 through slots of which pass pivot pins 36 pivotably connecting 30, 32 of each shoe to the respective cylinder 16 at the one shoe end. An automatic slack adjuster is provided comprising a return spring 48 located between a friction ring 46 engaging a central rod 38 threaded into cylinder 16 and contacting the end of a blind bore 50 in piston 18, and a washer 42 retained by a flange 40. When the brakes are applied piston 18 is advanced under fluid pressure and spring 48 is compressed between washer 42 and ring 46. On releasing brake pressure piston 18 is retracted until a shoulder 52 thereof engages ring 46. When the linings are worn piston 8 advances sufficiently to allow the coils spring 48 to contact one another and the ring 46 slides along the rod 38, and again contacts shoulder 52 when the brakes are released resulting in automatic take-up of slack.
