Abstract

1,179,890. Disc brakes; brake cylinders. ALFRED TEVES G.m.b.H. 15 June, 1967 [24 Sept., 1966], No. 27714/67. Headings F2E and F2F. A disc brake has a main actuating member operated when fluid pressure exceeds a given value, the initial pressure causing auxiliary piston-operated screw arrangements to advance the pad to the disc. In Fig. 1 the main brake is applied by pistons 6, 6a under fluid pressure in cavities 14, 14a, a valve (not shown), allowing the pressure to act only when it exceeds a given value. Prior to this, small pistons (Fig. 2) advance racks 7 to the right in (Fig. 2) to rotate rods 10 and thus the respective threaded members 8, 8a to advance members 9, thus to take up any slack. Movements of the rack also advances a friction held non-return member 17 (Fig. 2), springs 16 causing small clearance retractions of the pads when fluid pressure is released. Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), utilize a similar piston-operated slack adjuster but the main brake pressure is applied by an eccentric cam acting on the end of one rack, the eccentric being revolved by a lever (21) operated by fluid pressure cylinder (not shown). The brake may be either of the moving caliper or moving disc type. In Fig. 6 slack adjustment is effected by a similar fluid pressure operated rack and pinion system. The piston 6 in the main cylinder is, however, held retracted by a stack of conical spring washers (22) so that it does not come into operation until the fluid pressure exceeds the spring pressure and slack adjustment has, therefore, been effected. Mechanical operation of the brake may be effected by an eccentric shaftportion 20 operating on the piston and rotated by a lever 21. In a dual braking system the front brake auxiliary cylinders are connected with the master cylinder for operating the rear brakes.
