Abstract

1,084,410. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Jan. 22, 1965, No. 56586/66. Divided out of 1,070,311. Headings F2E and F2F. In a disc brake of the kind incorporating friction pads 13, 17 adapted to be applied to opposite sides of a rotatable brake disc 10, the friction pads are mounted in a caliper 11 which is pivoted at 12 and each friction pad is applied to the brake disc by a piston 15, 19 working in an hydraulic cylinder 16, 21, the two cylinders 16, 21 being connected to two separate hydraulic circuits to a tandem master cylinder 22, an automatic adjuster 31-33 being incorporated between one piston and the rear end of the cylinder in which it works to advance the piston in the cylinder as the friction pads wear. The primary pressure space 23 in the tandem master cylinder between the main piston 24 actuated by the brake pedal 25 and the secondary or floating piston 26 supplies liquid to the brake cylinder 21 and the secondary pressure space 27 between the piston 26 and the end of the cylinder supplies liquid to the brake cylinder 16. As the cylinder 21 is of greater diameter than the cylinder 16 the braking effort is normally applied by the piston 19 which applies the friction pads 17 directly to the disc, the reaction on the caliper applying the friction pad 13. In the event of failure of the line between the master cylinder and the brake cylinder 21 the pedal advances the main piston 24 until it engages an axial extension 29 on the secondary piston 26 and advances the latter piston directly to supply liquid under pressure to the cylinder 16 so that the piston 15 applies the brake pad 13 directly and the reaction on the caliper 11 moves the other friction pad 17 into frictional contact with the brake disc 10. The automatic brake adjuster takes the form of a stem 31 screwed in an axial recess in the rear end of the piston, a stem being provided with a head provided with peripheral ratchet teeth co-operating with a spring- pressed pivoted pawl 33. During operation of the brake when the forward movement of the piston 19 exceeds the value dependent on the spacing of the ratchet teeth, the pawl rides over one or more teeth and as the piston returns the stem is rotated to advance the " off" position of the piston. An alternative form of automatic adjusting mechanism is disclosed in a Specification (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4, not shown) in which inclined pawl teeth (35) engage between an internal shoulder in an axial recess in the piston 19 and the thread of a screwed stem (36) fixed in the outer end of the cylinder. The piston 19 may be formed with recesses to receive a key by which the piston can be rotated to screw it back on the stem (36) when the friction pads have been renewed. Instead of the caliper being allowed to float, the caliper may be fixed and the disc may be allowed to move axially.
