Abstract

1303127 Internal shoe-drum brakes; adjusting for wear; indicating wear ROBERT BOSCH GmbH 2 April 1970 [2 April 1969] 15562/70 Heading F2E A brake such as an internal shoe drum brake which includes a brake shoe 15 movable by a threaded pin 12 screwed into a nut 9 in a cylinder bore 4 is automatically adjustable by virtue of a helical 45 degrees gearing connection 17, 18 between the nut 9 and a shaft 19, the shaft 19 carrying a ratchet wheel 24 having toothing 25 co-operating with a pawl 26 such that excessive movement of the brake shoe 15 in a braking operation will cause excessive rotational movement of gear 18 to thereby cause the pawl 26 to jump from one tooth to the next to adjust the axial position of nut 9 and hence adjust the brake as the brake is released. The nut 9 is moved in the cylinder bore 4 by the interaction of a cone-piece 2 at the end of a piston rod 1, and a roller 3 movable by the piston rod 1 on an oblique surface 8 of a plunger 7, the plunger 7 being held against rotation in the cylinder bore by co-operation of a key 6 and a key-way 6<SP>1</SP>. Automatic adjustment of the brake in this way will eventually bring a movable contact 29 on a stub 23 of the shaft 19 into cooperation with a fixed contact 30 to thereby complete a circuit 32 and light a lamp 31 to warn of substantial wear of the brake linings. The stub 23 also has a projecting tong 27 which permits of manual adjustment of the brake by a suitable tool. As shown in Fig. 3 the pawl 36 is pivotal on a lever 36<SP>1</SP> which is itself pivotally mounted and is biased towards a stop 37 by a spring 38; during initial release of the brake the pivoted lever 36<SP>1</SP> moves the pawl 36 away from the ratchet wheel 24 to relieve pressure on the gearing 17, 18, and the pawl is thereafter moved back towards the wheel 24. The arrangement is said to be applicable to disc brakes also.
