Abstract

1,092,686. Vehicle brakes. H. TEVES, E. A. TEVES and M. TAUSEND [trading as ALFRED TEVES MASCHINENUND ARMATURENFABRIK KOMM. GES.] Feb. 15, 1966 [March 15, 1965], No. 6577/66. Heading F2E. An hydraulic brake in which two pistons 2 reciprocate to opposite hands in a pair of hydraulic cylinders 1 to apply linings 21<SP>1</SP> to a brake surface has operating the pistons a mechanical device comprising an actuating shaft 3 extending through the cylinder with its axis transverse to the direction of movement of the pistons and connected thereto by transmission members, see Fig. 1, which convert rotatory movement of the shaft 3 to axial braking movement of the piston 2 and are connected to the piston through an adjusting drive 7, 8 which determines the relative position of the piston and the transmission axially in the cylinder and on every occasion the brake is applied move the piston away from its transmission member by a step of predetermined length as the piston is advanced towards the brake surface. The actuating shaft has a cutaway position at 24-26 forming a flat surface of what the upper or lower edge can operate as a cam on the abutting back surface of the transmission member which is perpendicular to the axis of the piston. The barrel 7 of the adjusting drive is rotationally attached to the transmission member and is screw threaded onto a stem 2a on the piston 2. The adjusting member 8 is pivoted at 19 on the transmission member and has a lever arm 15 which engages with the end 18 of a pin protruding inwards from the cylinder wall so as to cause the member 8 to rock about its pivot whenever the transmission member is moved to apply the brake. When the member 8 is rocked an arm 14 on its end overrides one or more teeth protruding from a wheel on the end of the barrel 7 and when the brake is released again it engages the tooth whereon it rests and with the aid of a spring arm at 16 rotates the barrel and transmission member about the screw thread on the stem 2a to increase the distance between the flat surface on the transmission member and the piston head. Recesses 41, 42 are provided for manual adjustment of the piston head when the brake is released.
