Abstract

1355477 Slack adjusters GIRLING Ltd 23 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 8912/72 Heading F2E An internal shoe drum brake has a fluidpressure actuator 4 and an actuated slack adjuster 5 comprising a body 10, fixed to the back plate 1, a threaded adjuster spindle 11 bearing on the web of one shoe 2 and a nut 12 for co-operation therewith having indentations or recesses to facilitate its being turned by a suitable tool so that the spindle 11 moves outardly pushing the leading shoe outwardly. This movement is transmitted to the trailing shoe 3 by either a strut or, in a further embodiment, by the abutment of the two opposed pistons 4A, 4B which are in engagement when the brake is unactuated. A spring-loaded ball 14 co-operates with the nut recesses to enable the operator to sense when the nut has turned by one increment of movement between a pair of recesses. The adjuster 5 may be mounted on a raised portion 1A of the back plate and may be actuated automatically or manually. A bell crank lever 7 for manual actuation of the brake is provided.
