1402527 Automatic adjusters; internal shoedrum brakes GIRLING Ltd 16 Nov 1972 [23 Nov 1971] 54342/71 Heading F2E An internal shoe-drum brake has an adjuster strut comprising male and female screw threaded parts 8, 9 arranged between leading and trailing shoes 2, the part 9 being formed with a ratchet wheel 10 rotatable by a pawl lever 11 to effect extension of the strut 8, 9 to compensate for wear of the brake shoe linings and the pawl tip 12 being formed with two (or more) pawl teeth 12A, 12B spaced apart generally circumferentially of the ratchet wheel 10 along an arc of a circle or on a straight line. As shown in Figs. 1, 3, the shoes 2 may be actuated by a double ended cylinder 5 against the action of shoe return springs 6, or mechanically by an actuating lever 4 pivoted to the trailing shoe 2 at a pivot pin 7 and acting on one end of the adjuster strut 8, 9. Upon service actuation by cylinder 5 the shoes 2 expand to relieve the strut 8, 9 of loading by return springs 6 to allow a spring 13 to pivot the pawl lever 11 so that if the shoe movement is excesive indicating that adjustment is necessary the total movement of the pawl tip 12 is sufficient to effect an increment of adjustment by turning the ratchet wheel 10. Mechanical (hand brake) actuation is effected by rotating lever 4 clockwise to force the tip of the trailing shoe 2 rightwards and the strut 8, 9 and leading shoe 2 leftwards by reaction. The return springs 6 continue to act on the strut parts and rotation of the ratchet wheel 10 is prevented. As seen in Fig. 4, the pawl lever 11 is made as a sheet metal pressing in the form of a bellcrank lever with a hole 17 to receive pivot pin 7. One arm includes pawl tip 12 which is bent at right angles to the remainder of the arm and the opposite arm has a flange 16 for attachment of spring 13 and has a pip 17 which forms a fulcrum point for rocking of the lever 11 about an axis generally parallel with the plane of the lever 11. The pitch of the pawl teeth 12A, 12B is slightly less than that of the ratchet wheel teeth.
