Abstract

1383299 Internal shoe drum brakes GIRLING Ltd 22 Nov 1972 [23 Nov 1971] 54340/71 Heading F2E In an internal shoe drum brake a mechanical actuator is provided having an actuating lever 16 directly applying one shoe 14 and applying the other shoe 13 through an adjustable length strut 22 and being mounted on a roller 18 through which passes a roller 17 engaging the back plate 11 providing a reaction point against the back plate 11 for forces acting perpendicular thereto, the reaction point being remote from the pivotal connections between lever 16 and shoes 13, 14. As shown, lever 16 has a finger 19 for applying shoe 13 and is pivotally connected to the forked end 21 of the strut, the other end 23 of which engages the web of shoe 14. Lever 16 may have a lug extending away from the outer end thereof for the shaft 17 to extend therethrough to provide a longer input lever arm between the shaft arm and the connection point of the lever to a distant operating mechanism. An automatic slack adjuster may be provided comprising a ratchet nut 25 threadedly engaging strut part 26, strut 22 also having a hollow cylindrical part 24. A pawl 27 engages the ratchet under the bias of a torsion spring 30 and forms one arm of a follower 28 rotatably mounted on shaft 27, the other arm 29 engaging shoe 13. As the brakes are applied through an hydraulic actuator 12 arm 29 engages the web of shoe 13 and if sufficient lining wear has occurred rotates pawl 27 thereby rotating nut 25 and lengthening strut 22.
