Abstract

1,091,412. Disc brakes. GIRLING Ltd. June 4, 1964 [June 17, 1963], No. 19644/63. Heading F2E. In a spot type disc brake a friction pad 12 is adapted to be applied to the disc by a thrust member, formed by the pistonrod 14, which is actuated by a piston 15 working in an hydraulic cylinder 16 in one limb of the caliper, the end of the thrust member in engagement with the friction pad being adapted to move to a limited degree as the friction pad moves from one abutment to the other on reversal of the direction of rotation of the disc, the thrust member being in slidable sealing engagement with a resilient annular member 21 which is located between the thrust member and a surface of the caliper 11 and is attached to or carried by the forward end of an axially extending sleeve 22 which fits over the thrust member. Between the sleeve 22 and the thrust member 14 is located an annular sleeve like member 23 which frictionally grips the thrust member to restrain return movement of the latter during short duration impact loads applied to the friction pad 12 by the disc. During normal brake applying and retracting movements the friction member 23 moves axially with the thrust member 14 but allows the thrust member to slide through it when the friction pad 12 has worn to a predetermined extent so that there is maintained between the friction pad and the disc in the " off " position of the brake a substantially constant clearance defined by the permitted free movement of a radial flange 24 at the rear of the sleeve 22 in an annular recess 25 of limited axial length in the caliper 11. Although the embodiment disclosed above relates to a floating caliper disc brake the invention may be applied to disc brakes in which the caliper may be fixed axially and the disc is axially movable relative to the caliper. Alternatively the invention may be applied to disc brakes in which the caliper is fixed and in which opposed friction pads are both directly actuated by actuating means located in or on the limbs of the caliper. The brakes disclosed above may be operated by mechanical actuating means acting on the thrust members 14.
