Abstract
938,976. Automatic brake adjusters. BENDIX CORPORATION. May 23, 1961 [May 24, 1960; Sept. 22, 1960], No. 18603/61. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] A brake-actuating, fluid pressure motor includes a piston 14 movable in a cylinder 12, and an automatic adjuster 20 comprising abutment means 36 against which the piston is normally biased by a return spring 48 and which is resiliently yieldable to permit the piston to move backwards beyond the normal position in which it is biased by the return spring. As shown, the adjuster 20 includes a stem 22, the boss 23 of which is held against the cylinder end wall by a washer 24, and a piston-positioning sleeve 28 having a flange 30 resiliently forced by a spring 34 against the boss 32 of the stem. The sleeve 28 is coupled to the piston by a split friction ring 36 which grips the sleeve and is maintained against the wall 39 of the piston by a tubular member 40 coaxial with and movable with respect to the sleeve. A thrust washer 46 is secured to the piston and the distance j between the confronting end surfaces of the washer and the member 40 provides a lost motion for the piston. A pin 50 projects into the slot of the split ring 36. Fluid pressure delivered to the chamber 18 moves the piston 14 together with the washer 46 and the spring 48 is compressed so that the washer then engages the member 40 and on continued movement of the piston the member moves against the frictional resistance of the ring 36, the latter being pushed along the sleeve 28 to a position corresponding to the engagement of the friction pad 16 with the brake disc. Release of the pressure in the chamber 18 allows the spring 48 to return the piston until the ring 36 re-engagss the wall 39. Specification 861,648 is referred to.
