Abstract

804,826. Brake automatic adjusters. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Jan. 30, 1957 [March 21, 1956], No. 3316/57. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIV] An automatic adjustment device, which although shown applied to a disc brake, may be used equally well on other forms of fluid pressure actuated brake, comprises a pressureresponsive element 14 reciprocal in a bore in a fixed carrier member 12 and having secured to its end friction element carrier plates 22, the element 14 having an inner bore therein, within which slides a positioning member 28. The positioning member 28 is normally moved by the piston element 14 in the brake applying direction by a friction ring 34 therebetween until a sleeve 54 within the member 28 abuts the boss 46 on the end of a stem 42 secured at its end 44 to the fixed carrier member 12, the spring 50 being compressed during this movement. On release of the brake the spring 50 expands and moves the member 28 and piston element 14 back through the distance D to reset the clearance. If at any time the clearance between friction members 22 and 24 is reduced below the proper amount application of fluid pressure behind piston element 14, first moves the piston element and friction member 22 to bring it into engagement with member 24 and then acts on the inner end of member 28 to move the member forward relative to the member 14. Thus, when the brake is released, after only a single brake application, the clearance is always restored to the correct amount. Fig. 5 shows a similar arrangement in which the friction ring 34c is adapted to slide in the bore of the hollow piston member 14c, being wedged against a projection on the member 28c by a clamping nut 36c.
