Abstract

531,936. Adjusting brakes. SVENSKA AKTIEBOLAGET BROMSREGULATOR, and BROWALL, B. H. Aug. 8, 1939, No. 22881. [Class 103 (i)] Relates to operating means for automatic slack-adjusters that act both to increase and decrease slack and are arranged as at 7 in one of a pair of pull-rods 5, 40 connected to levers 2, 4 linked together as at 3 and operated as by a cylinder 1. In adjusters of this kind and as described for instance in Specification 418,492, the rod 5 is in two parts relatively slidable under the control of a casing 7 slidable on the rod and adapted to be moved in one direction at brake application against the action of a spring 8 and in the other direction at brake release. In order to reduce the reaction of the spring 8 on the brake piston, the operating rod 9, for the casing 7, in the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, instead of being connected to the lower end of the lever 4 is connected to a lever 11 linked by a rod 12 to the lever 2 so as to increase the leverage. As shown, the levers 2, 4 are adapted selectively to be connected by either of two links 3, 3a to vary the brake applying leverage according to the vehicle load. In Fig. 4, the operating rod 9 for the casing 7 is connected to the lever 4 but operates the casing through a lever 13a pivoted to the casing at 21 and bearing by a roller 22 on the rod 5 so that the leverage is increased. The increase of leverage reduces the extent of movement of the casing and thus of the slack reduction at a single brake operation and in order that an abnormally excessive slack may be reduced at one brake operation the lever 13a may be adapted to engage a projection 25 on the casing. after a predetermined movement so that it then has the same movement as the rod 9. The lever 13a may be arranged to abut on the flange 23 on the rod 5 below the pivot 21 near the end of the release movement so as to move the casing 7 relatively to the rod 5, sufficiently to lock the adjuster against slack-increasing action due to shocks. In a further arrangement, the lever 13a is so shaped that it ceases to be moved by the rod 9 after a pre-determined movement.
