Abstract
679,126. External drum brakes. ELLISTON, E. R. Oct. 20, 1950 [July 20, 1949], No. 19141/49. Class 103 (i). In an external drum brake of the type in which the shoes 3 are normally applied to the drum 2 by a weight and released by a power unit such as an electromagnet or a pneumatic or hydraulic thruster 19, the entire power unit 19 is arranged to form part at least of the applying weight. As shown in Fig. 1, the brake is in the applied condition, and the weight of the power unit 19, which in this case forms the entire applying weight, acts through the lever 16 pivoted at 17 to the frame 7, the link 12, spring 14, bell-crank 8, 8a, 8b, pivoted at 9 to shoe-applying lever 6, and the link 10 adjustably secured to the shoe-applying lever 5. When the power unit 19 is energized to release the brake, the rod 20 is moved upwards and acts through link 23 to pivot the lever 16 in an anti-clockwise sense about the fulcrum 17 so that the linkage takes up the disposition shown in Fig. 4. In a modification, the top end of the link 12 may be pivoted to the free arm 8b of the bell-crank 8 at any one of a number of spaced points, thus providing a variable leverage.
