Class 103(1) In brake actuating means for colliery or other winding machinery of the type in which the brake is applied by a weight d which is raised to release the brake by hydraulic pressure acting in cylinder a upon a piston b under the control of a valve e by a hand lever g, a further hydraulic piston q is provided which is connected to the brake lever h in such a way as to produce a more rapid application of the brakes in an emergency. The action of piston q is controlled by a valve s operable through linkage w by a second hand lever x. In order that the emergency operation may be varied in intensity according to the position of the cage in the wind, a rotary cam z driven by part of the winding machinery acts to control a throttle y in the passage between the supply passage 3 and the control valve s.
