Abstract
407,101. Hydraulic transmission of power. AVERY, W. L., The Blue House, Thorley, Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire. Sept. 22, 1932, No. 26412. [Class 69 (ii).] In fluid-pressure operating mechanism for brakes, clutches,&c. of the kind in which fluid is expelled from a chamber or cylinder to effect the operation, a valve by which a fluid supply is connected to the chamber is arranged to be actuated by movement of the chamber. An operating cylinder 1 for the wheel brakes of an aeroplane is mounted on trunnions 2 and the piston rod 7 is connected to a pedal 8 which is also the rudder control, the arrangement being such that pressure on the part 10 operates the rudder through a lever 9 while pressure by the heel on the part 11 operates the rod 7 whereby fluid is expelled to the brake cylinders through passages 4, 5, 6. Normally, a valve 13 mounted in a casing carried by the cylinder is held open by engagement of the valve rod 18 with a fixed pin 21 to connect a passage 12 from a supply reservoir to the passage 5, 6 to keep the system filled but the swinging movement of the cylinder on the trunnions 2 consequent upon the depression of the pedal to apply the brakes causes the valve rod to leave the pin 21 so that the valve is closed by the spring 14.
