Abstract

412,965. Operating clutches. BROWN, D. F., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Jan. 6, 1933, No. 479. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to mechanism for operating brakes, clutches or other devices, comprising a fluidpressure operated piston or equivalent, the pressure on which is transmitted to the brake shoes or equivalent through a hydraulic medium, and consists in the provision of a valve device controlled by the hydraulic pressure for limiting the pressure in the fluidpressure cylinder and thus also the hydraulic pressure, and of an arrangement of operating connections between the fluid-pressure piston and a hydraulic master piston. Fig. 2 shows a pneumatic cylinder 17 formed integrally with a casing 22 within which an hydraulic master cylinder 16 is mounted and which serves as a reservoir for the hydraulic system. The piston rod 21 of the pneumatic piston abuts on a lever 20 pivoted at 23, the other end of the lever engaging the hydraulic master piston through a thrust rod 25, neither of the pistons being positively secured to the lever. The valve device comprises a piston 8, Fig. 1, subject to the hydraulic pressure through a port 12 and having a rod 9 adapted to engage the stem 7 of a valve 2 which is subject to the air pressure in the cylinder 17 through port 4 and to the pressure of a light spring 3. The valve is normally seated at 15, and if, during the operation of the brakes &c., the hydraulic pressure is sufficient to overcome a spring 10 and the air and spring pressure on the valve, the valve is lifted and air escapes from the cylinder 17 through the passage 13 and port 6. The passage 13 may be of varying cross-section, as shown, so that the greater the excess pressure, the greater is the rate of reduction of the pressure. If the spring 10 should break, while the system is under pressure, the valve 2 is forced on to an upper seat 14 to prevent loss of pressure through the port 6 which would otherwise occur.
