Abstract
467,508. Fluid-pressure brakes. SIMMONS, A. W., and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 17, 1935, No. 34995. [Class 103 (i)] A graduated release valve having a piston 2 subject to train pipe pressure in a chamber 3 and to the pressure of a control chamber 8 in chamber 6 is arranged so that the piston 2 moves to the left when train pipe pressure falls on brake application and thus varies the pressure in control chamber 6, 8 so that the position of the piston 2 is dependent on the extent of fall of train pipe pressure and the brake cylinder pressure at which release of fluid from the brake cylinder is cut off is dependent on this position. A chamber 17 is connected by port 21 to the triple valve exhaust part and past valve 15 seating on a piston 19 to an atmospheric port 24. A lever 10 connected to the piston 2 has a pin-and-slot connection 12, 13 with the valve 15 and when the piston 2 moves to the left on brake application, the pin 12 moves to the other end of the slot 13. When the brakes are released the piston 2 moves to the right and the triple valve connects the brake cylinder with the chamber 17. Brake cylinder pressure thereupon first closes the valve 15 and then moves the piston 19 away from the valve 15 to connect the brake cylinder to atmosphere. When brake cylinder pressure has fallen the piston 19 is moved back against the valve 15 by a spring 25. Further increase of train pipe pressure moves the piston 2 further to the right to reopen the valve 15 and the same action is repeated.
