Abstract
750,999. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd., and SIMMONS, A. W. Feb. 23, 1955 [March 17, 1954], No. 7722/54. Class 103 (1). In a closed circuit fluid pressure braking system, a vent device is provided in the return circuit from the brake or hydraulic master cylinder actuating means-and the low-pressure side of the compressor such that during a release of the brakes, fluid is permitted to leak slowly to atmosphere so that a rapid rise in exhaust pressure is prevented when the brakes are operated after the compressor has ceased to function. In the embodiment illustrated, a compressor 1 is supplied with air at its low pressure side via strainer 2 and check valve 3 and after compression the air is supplied through check valve 4 to a reservoir 5 fitted with a safety valve 6. The reservoir 5 supplies compressed air to a pedal-operated servomotor 7 which operates a hydraulic brake system. When the brakes are released, air is vented from the servomotor 7 through conduit 9 provided with a small vent device 10 which permits air under pressure to leak from conduit 9 to atmosphere. The vent device 10 prevents a back pressure being exerted on the servomotor 7 and thereby reducing the force applied to the brakes when the compressor is out of action.
