Abstract
920,351. Fluid-pressure brakes. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTINGHOUSE. Sept. 27, 1960 [Oct. 7, 1959], No. 33110/60. Class 103 (1). A vent or release valve device for compressed fluid braking apparatus comprises chambers 6 and 7 for connection to an auxiliary reservoir and a brake cylinder respectively, and connected by passage 5 closable by a valve 11 controlled by a single piston 48 which normally closes vent passages 51, 52 between chamber 7 and atmosphere, the piston being exposed to atmosphere on the underside and on the other side by brake pipe pressure via conduit 57 acting to maintain valve 11 open and passages 51, 52 closed, and a manually-operated member 19 for actuating a pilot valve 55 for delivery of compressed fluid from the auxiliary reservoir to the underside of the piston 48 to cause it to move upwardly and close the valve 11, the valve then being maintained closed by auxiliary reservoir pressure, brake pipe pressure (if present) returning the piston to an intermediate position (Fig. 2), blocking connection between the brake cylinder and atmosphere, and (if absent) resulting in piston 11 being maintained clear of the vent passage 51. A vent or release valve disclosed above is provided for instance in a railway compressed-air braking system so that when a vehicle equipped with such apparatus is detached from its train, the brake pipe is disconnected and may be left open to atmosphere the vent or release valve device releasing the compressed fluid in the braking system whilst sealing the auxiliary reservoir from atmosphere.
