850,450. Vent valve for fluid pressure brakes. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTINGHOUSE. Oct. 17, 1958 [Oct. 26, 1957], No. 33169/58. Class 103 (1). A vent valve device for compressed fluid braking apparatus, comprises chambers 6, 7 for connection to an auxiliary reservoir and a brake cylinder respectively, and connected by a passage 5 closable by a valve 11 controlled by a piston 8b coaxially slidable in a piston 8a which normally closes a vent passage 12 between chamber 7 and atmosphere, the pistons being exposed to atmosphere on one side and on the other to brake pipe pressure acting to maintain valve 11 open and passage 12 closed, and a manually operable member 19 by which the pistons can be moved to close valve 11 and open passage 12. With the apparatus on a railway vehicle, the brakes are normally applied on separation of the vehicle from the train, to release the brakes, operation of member 19 moves pistons 8a, 8b via plunger 20 against springs 14, 21 to uncover port 13 and connect passage 12 to a reduced diameter portion 15 of piston 8a, ports 18 and atmospheric chamber 22 to vent the brake cylinder only to release the brakes, the passage 5 being closed by valve 11. The pistons are held raised by escaping fluid acting on the lower face of piston 8a and by auxiliary reservoir pressure acting on the lower face of valve 11 which is fixed by rod 9 to piston 8b. When a truck has been reconnected with a train, the brake pipe pressure rises and acts through a connection, not shown, to lower the pistons 8a, 8b, close passage 12 and open valve 11. The rod 9 is a loose fit in bore 10, permitting the venting of chamber 10a to atmosphere via duct 9a, sealing rings 11a prevent fluid escaping to duct 9a from the auxiliary reservoir when valve 11 is closed.
