824,080. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE AIR BRAKE CO. Dec. 24, 1957 [Dec. 28, 1956], No. 39997/57. Class 103 (1). A combined fluid-pressure and vacuum brake apparatus comprises the combination of a brake pipe 2, the pressure of fluid in which is reduced and increased for causing an application and release of locomotive brakes respectively, a vacuum train pipe 8, a vacuum source such as the reservoir 10, and a conduit 40, 44 with flow restricting means, such as the port 42, interposed between the conduit 44 and the vacuum source 10, there being provided vacuum control means, such as the valve device 7, responsive to a reduction in brake pipe pressure, to admit atmospheric air to the vacuum train pipe to effect an application of brakes on the connected cars of a train to an amount corresponding to the value of brake pipe pressure reduction, the vacuum control means being responsive to an increase in brake pipe pressure to connect the vacuum train pipe to the conduit for causing a release of the brakes on the connected cars, and pilot valve means, such as the valve device 20, automatically responsive to an increase in brake pipe pressure to supply fluid under pressure to normally closed quick release valve means 9 for actuating the latter to an open position to establish a large capacity flow communication between the vacuum source 10 and the conduit by-passing the flow restricting means 42.
