871,880. Liquid-releasing apparatus for gas systems. BENDIX-WESTINGHOUSE AUTOMOTIVE AIR BRAKE CO. Oct. 21. 1959 [Feb. 24, 1959], No. 35698/59. Class 64(2) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIV] A cylinder-and-piston device for getting rid of condensate from a reservoir 10, e.g. of a compressed-gas brake-system, has an inlet port 26 through which condensate is passed from the reservoir (when the piston 38 is raised from the position shown to its normal upper position) through a piston groove 54 to an inner cavity 55, when a valve 16 is operated, e.g., by a brake pedal, a conduit 18 is cut off from the atmosphere but is opened to the reservoir 10 so that gas passes through a by-pass 20 to a space 50 above the piston 38 and forces the piston down to the position shown. The inlet 26 and a communicating space 53 in the cylinder 28 are then closed from the groove 54 and the piston cavity 55 and condensate is released from the cavity 55 through the groove 54 to an outlet 46. When the valve 16 is released, conduits 18, 20 are opened to atmosphere while pressure from the reservoir operates in the space 53 to raise the piston to its normal position, with the groove 54 closed to the outlet 46 but open to the inlet 26, until the brakes are applied again. A manually-operated device may be provided for draining if the' main device fails.
