925,652. Vacuum braking systems. KNORRBREMSE G.m.b.H. Jan. 28, 1960 [Jan. 30, 1959], No. 3191/60. Class 103 (1). A vacuum brake installation has a pressureresponsive piston 19 controlling a valve device 31 in such a manner that when pressure in train pipe 1 is increased to initiate a braking action, air from a reservoir 35 charged to atmospheric pressure, enters the train pipe to accelerate the increase in train pipe pressure and the braking action. The stem 25 of diaphragm piston 19 has a slide valve portion 27 and an end-plate 29 co-operating with seat 33 to control the connection of reservoir 35 with train pipe 1. With the brakes released, vacuum exists in pipe 1, chambers 5 and 7 of brake cylinder 11, and chambers 15 and 21 of valve 15, the chambers 11 and 21 communicating with pipe 1 via non-return valve 9. The resilience of piston 19 maintains plate 29 against seat 33 to connect reservoir 35 to atmosphere. When the pressure in pipe 1 rises for brake application, piston 19 is raised to cut-off reservoir 35 from atmosphere and connect it to pipe I via valve 29, 33 to accelerate the pressure rise in pipe I and accelerate the brake application. Reservoir 35 ensures a predetermined pressure in train pipe 1 independently of how long valve 29, 33 is opened.
