Abstract
712,596. Compressed air brake systems. ATELIERS DES CHARMILLES SOC. ANON. Dec. 23, 1952 [Jan. 8, 1952], No. 32564/52. Class 103(1) In a distributer valve assembly for compressed air brakes for railway vehicles special provision is made to prevent the accelerating chamber 6 being reconnected to the main pipe H to produce further undesirable pressure reductions after the initial braking impulse has taken place. The accelerating valve unit, as shown at B, comprises a hollow central member 1 which, as a result of main pipe and control reservoir pressures acting above and below a diaphragm 2 causes the valve 12 to be lifted to connect the main pipe H to the chamber 6, or connects the chamber 6 through the central passage 3 to atmosphere by chamber 8 and passage 15. A slidable piston 17 in the chamber 8 below the lower end of member 1 has an upper face acting as a valve seat to seal off the passage 3 and a lower face subject to brake cylinder pressure through passage 16. The piston 17 is thus kept pressed against the valve 11 to prevent emptying of the chamber by the brake cylinder pressure acting below until the brake cylinder pressure falls to about 0.2 to 0.3 kg. per square centimetre, when the pressure on the upper surface becomes the greater.
