In a compressed air brake system, particularly for rail vehicles, including a control device 45 interposed in a charging pipe between a pressure supply line 29 and a constant pressure control chamber 37, 39, the device 45 being operable, when the brake is in released condition, to throttle or shut off the charging pipe for a limited period, there is also provided a second control device arranged to interrupt the charging of the brake cylinder independently of the pressure in the pressure supply line and in the auxiliary air reservoir 17, as soon as the prescribed maximum pressure has been reached in the brake cylinder, or a control device may be arranged to throttle or shut off the charging of the auxiliary reservoir for a limited time or during the release period. As shown in Fig. 1, said second control device comprises a piston 73 adapted to move against spring 71 to shut valve 69 leading from the auxiliary reservoir 17 to line 19 to the triple valve as soon as the pressure in brake cylinder 21 has reached a certain value.
