Abstract
796,265. Compressed air brakes. KNORRBREMSE GES. Oct. 15, 1956 [Oct. 14, 1955], No .31390/56. Addition to 750,582. Class 103(1). A control valve for compressed air brake systems comprises a main air pipe 1, a triple valve 5, a constant-pressure chamber 13, an air conduit 15 leading from the main air pipe 1 to the constant pressure chamber 13, means 23 for varying the cross-sectional area of the conduit, a control device 17 downstream of the varying means 23 for permitting or stopping air flow to the chambers 13, the control device 17 being operated in dependence upon pressure in the brake cylinder 61 by pipe 63, an accelerating device 67 acting to bleed the main air pipe 1, the device 67 being controllable by air pressure in the brake cylinder acting through pipe 65, the accelerating device 67 being in the position of readiness when the varying means 23 is in a first position, a control means for controlling the varying means 23 which is operated by displacement of the piston system of the triple valve 5 and a direct connection 31 between the varying means 23 and the control means 33, the arrangement being such that upon braking the control means 33 causes the varying means 23 to move from a first position to a second position in which the cross-sectional area of the conduit 21 is reduced and further such that the varying means 23 is maintained in the second position until the braking action of the triple valve has been substantially wholly completed. As shown in the embodiment illustrated, the control means comprises a frusto-conical member 33 movable upwardly during a brake application as the pressure in chamber 11 is reduced, the varying means comprising a needle valve 23 being forced further into the sensitivity aperture 21 leading to the control chamber change valve 17. The relatively long travel of the sleeve 37 which is necessary to fully reopen the sensitivity aperture 21 makes possible a releasing operation without the filling surge effect that usually occurs on the rear coaches of a long train.
