Abstract

752,058. Fluid-pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 5, 1954 [Nov. 6, 1953], No. 32059/54. Addition to 751,578. Class 103 (1). In a foot valve as claimed in Specification 751,578 the auxiliary body is spring-biased towards its unoperated position. In the embodiment shown applied to a tractor-trailer braking system the construction is similar to that illustrated in Specification 751,578 except that the auxiliary body 2 is spring- biased towards its unoperated position by an adjustable spring and pivoted lever arrangement 31-36 such that there is a delay between the operation of the trailer brakes and the operation of the tractor brakes to prevent " jack-knifing." Compressed air is transmitted to the trailer brakes via port 7, chamber 21, valve controlled passage 19, into chamber 14 and outlet port 8, and to the tractor brakes via port 30, chamber 29, valve controlled passage 24, into chamber 27 via conduit 28. The pressure admitted to the cylinder of the tractor will be lower than the pressure admitted to the trailer by an amount depending on the tension of the spring 35 which is adjustable so that it is possible to vary the decrease in pressure admitted to the tractor as a function of that admitted to the trailer. A further modification lies in the fact that the maximum pressure set up in the trailer brake cylinders may be adjusted by means of the nut 5 screwed on stem 4 of the first piston 11 such that if the nut is moved down the stem 4 to a point where the nut bears on the head 37 of the auxiliary body 2 before control of the braking circuit of the tractor is initiated by the means already described, further pressure exerted on stem 4 results in the depression of the body 2 thus initiating control of the tractor braking, the air pressure in the chamber 14 and the trailer conduit remaining constant. An alternative arrangement of the position of the spring 35 is described in the Specification.
