Abstract
667,736. Brakes for tractor-trailer vehicles. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. April 4, 1950. No. 8468/50. Class 103 (i). A control valve mechanism for compressed air braking systems of tractor and trailer vehicles including a, main valve which, upon operation of a brake actuator, admits compressed air through a direct connection to the trailer brakes, and through a delay valve to the tractor brakes is characterized in that the delay valve includes a movable component formed with at least one restricted orifice and normally held against a seating by spring pressure, whereby under normal conditions of brake application air flows gradually through the orifice to the tractor brakes. but under emergency conditions the valve component is unseated to permit a more rapid air-flow to the tractor brakes, to ensure that the trailer brakes operate before those on the tractor. As shown, the supply of compressed air from a port 2 in the casing of the main valve A is controlled by a valve 12 operated by a piston 6 connected to the brake pedal, the air passing through a conduit 18 to the delay valve B communicating by ports 24, 32 with the trailer and tractor brakes respectively. The piston 6 is spaced from a second piston 8 by a compression spring 7, the piston 8 being slidable in a baffle member 16 and engageable with a disc valve 10 mounted on the stem of the valve 12. A port 17 in the member 16 ensures that while a reaction pressure is exerted on the piston 8, the latter is prevented from being forced backwards by the sudden admission of compressed air when the valve 12 is opened. There is direct communication between the conduit 18 and trailer brake port 24, by a delay valve 26 is fitted between the conduit 18 and tractor brake port 32. The valve 26 and an annular disc 28, which engages a seating 30, are pressed into engagement by a spring 29. An orifice 27 is provided in the valve 26. During a normal brake application air admitted by the valve 12 passes directly to the trailer brakes through port 24, and maintains the disc 28 in contact with the seating 30, so that there is delayed admission of air to the tractor brakes through the orifice 27. On making a rapid brake application the pressure built up in the valve chamber overcomes the load imposed by the spring 28 and lifts the members 26, 28 from the seating 30, so that a more rapid admission of air to the tractor brakes occurs, although the trailer brakes are still applied first.
