Abstract
649,429. Fluid pressure brakes. WESTING- HOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Oct. 28, 1948, Nos. 27976 and 27977. Convention dates, Nov. 5, 1947, and July 28, 1948. [Class 103 (i)] In a fluid pressure brake system for a tractortrailer combination, a valve device 24 is fitted in the brake pipe 2, 5 on the tractor whereby the application of the tractor brakes is initially delayed with respect to the application of the brakes on the trailer (not shown). When the driver's valve 1 is actuated, pressure fluid from the reservoir 7 passes by pipes 2, 5 direct to the trailer brakes or to a relay valve operating same. Until the pressure in pipe 2 acting in chamber 20 'has increased to a certain value, which may be about 0.5 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, no pressure is transmitted to the tractor brake cylinders 9 and 10. Thereafter, however, the piston 12 in the valve device 24 which is open to atmosphere at its base, is pressed down against spring 15 and air passes by passage 21 and pipe 8 to the brake cylinders 9, 10 without suffering any reduction in pressure. A ball valve 19 ensures that air may escape from the cylinders 9, 10, although the piston 12 may have reclosed the port 20, when the brakes are released. In a modification, co-operating grooves in the side of the piston 12 and its cylinder allow air to escape from the brake cylinders direct to atmosphere.
