Abstract

584,157. Brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd., and WILLETT, S. E. Nov. 1, 1944, No. 21359. [Class 103 (i)] The pipe 1 is connected to the brake system of the tractor A and is joined with a pipe 3 on the trailer B to convey a corresponding fluid pressure to the trailer brake cylinder 6. When the tractor brakes are applied, the change-over valve 26 is set to operate the trailer brakes simultaneously. The pipe 2, which is connected to the compressed air supply on the tractor, is joined to a pipe 4 connected by valves 14, 11 with a reservoir 10 which is kept charged during normal running and is fitted with a safety valve. The valve 14 includes a piston 12 which is kept depressed by air pressure against the action of the spring 13, the passage between the connections 7, 9 being thus kept open. When the trailer is disconnected either intentionally or accidentally, the spring 13 raises the piston 12 to close the said passage, the piston rod 15 raises a sleeve 22 in the valve casing 19. This shuts off the atmospheric port 23 venting the pipe 17, and raises the valve 21 to permit pressure fluid to pass from the pipe 16 to the pipe 17, and by re-setting the valve 26 to the brake cylinder 6. A lever 25 permits the release of the brakes when the two vehicles are disconnected, or the application of the trailer brakes only when the vehicles are connected. The invention may be applied to a vacuum braking system, the reservoir 10 being replaced by a vacuum reservoir and the piston 12 being arranged to operate under suction instead of pressure. In either system, the piston 12 may be replaced by a diaphragm.
