[Class 103 (i)] A relay valve for use in a fluid-pressure brake system of a tractor-trailer combination and which is fitted on the trailer, comprises a hollow casing 1 divided into four chambers A, B and 8, 9 by two diaphragms 4 and 7, which are connected by a rod 14 extending through an axial passage 13 connecting the chambers B and 8 and having a branch connection 12 connected to the trailer brake cylinders. For normal operation of the valve to apply the trailer brakes, the diaphragm assembly is moved downwards under the action of the tractor vehicle control valve pressure in chamber A, atmospheric pressure in chamber B, trailer vehicle reservoir pressure in chamber 9 and tractor vehicle reservoir pressure in chamber 8. It is arranged that the valve member 43, secured to diaphragm 4, engages the spring valve seat 38 to close the release to atmosphere through port 6, before the collar 26 on the rod 14 depresses the valve member 25 to allow air from the trailer reservoir connected to port 11 to pass up passage 13 and out through port 12 to apply the trailer brakes. When it is desired to permanently release the trailer brakes, manual eccentric cam lever 35 is operated to raise the diaphragm assembly back to the position shown so that air may escape through the port 6. In the event of the trailer becoming disconnected from the tractor vehicle, since the chambers A and 8 will then be at atmospheric pressure, trailer reservoir pressure acting in chamber 9 depresses the diaphragm assembly to allow air to pass to the trailer brake cylinders to apply the brakes thereof. The nut 16 securing the rod 14 to the lower diaphragm 7, which is shown in section in Fig. 2, contains a non-return ball valve enabling air to pass from chamber 8 to chamber 9. In a modification of the valve for fitting on the tractor vehicle, so as to influence the braking of the tractor rear wheels, as well as the trailer, the ball valve 17, 18 is omitted.
