Abstract

1,026,472. Pneumatic suspension systems. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Feb. 5, 1963 [Feb. 9, 1962], No. 4584/63. Heading B7D. A pneumatic suspension system for the rear axle 7 of the tractor of a tractor and semitrailer combination includes escape valves 20, 20<SP>1</SP> which are operable pneumatically under the control of a lever 29 to enable the pressure in air springs 6 to be reduced prior to separation of the tractor from the semi-trailer, and are closed automatically after a predetermined interval during which separation is effected. A valve 25 normally connects an air feed pipe 26 with a reservoir 27 and a coupling head 28 for a trailer brake but upon actuation of the lever 29 the valve 25 connects the reservoir 27 with the escape valves 20, 20<SP>1</SP>. A piston 35 (Fig. 3) within each escape valve is displaced by the compressed air to unseat a valve 52 permitting air from the associated air spring 6 to lift a valve 42 and escape to atmosphere through a felt plug 48 and a perforated hood 49. A spring 44 is arranged to close the valve 42 when the air spring pressure is sufficiently reduced. A bleed orifice 36 uncovered by the piston 35 connects the reservoir 27 to atmosphere and after a predetermined interval the reservoir pressure drops sufficiently to permit a spring 54 to close the valve 52. In Fig. 4 (not shown), a further valve is pressurized simultaneously with the escape valves 20, 20<SP>1</SP> to cut off the air supply to levelling valves 12 which normally control the air spring pressure, and the pressure is relieved to restore the supply to the levelling valves immediately the semitrailer is separated from the tractor by a relief valve actuated upon release of a saddle normally depressed by engagement with the semitrailer.
