Abstract

704,436. Fluid pressure brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. March 5, 1952 [March 9, 1951], No. 5777/52. Class 103(1) In a vacuum servo operated hydraulic brake system for tractor-trailer vehicle combinations as shown in Fig. 1, the trailer brakes 16 are arranged to be applied on the first movement of the pedal 60 by the closing of a switch 52 which energizes a solenoid operated valve 36, thus allowing the pressure operative in a regulator valve 32 to be transmitted by conduits 38, 40 and 44 to relay valve 21 of known type which admits atmospheric air to the trailer brake cylinder 18 which is of the vacuum suspended type. The trailer brakes are thus applied in advance of the tractor brakes which are of known hydraulic type, the pressure applied by a master cylinder 54 being boosted by a vacuum servo unit 48. The regulator valve 32, shown in detail in Fig. 3, which is the same as that described in Specification 550,686 comprises a self-lapping valve, the valve elements 132, 138 of which are adjustable by a hand-set member 146 controlling the position of rod 130 to produce a definite pressure in chamber 108, the pressure being chosen to suit particular road conditions so that the brakes may be applied without skidding. This pressure then becomes the maximum operative to control the brakes at the relay valve 21. In the arrangements shown, apart from the initial advance application of the trailer brakes, both tractor and trailer braking pressures are subsequently controlled by the valve 58, there being a two-way shuttle valve, shown in Fig. 6, fitted at 42. In another arrangement described an advance pressure increase is maintained at the trailer brakes right up to the maximum pressure obtainable. The system described above clearly has advantages over a system such as that described in Specification 629,225 in that there is no lag in the normal application of the tractor brakes, although there is still an advance given to the trailer brakes.
