665,766. Fluid-pressure brakes. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO., Ltd. April 6, 1950 [April 27, 1949], No. 11213/49. Class 103 (i). A mechanical transmission system, which is particularly suited for use in fluid-pressure braking systems for tractor-trailer units, is dependent on the provision, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, of a cylinder f having a piston e therein, the force exerted on which by a constant vacuum or pneumatic pressure must first be overcome before the pedal a can be depressed to operate a brake through the linkage c. In Fig. 4, the invention is shown applied to a tractor trailer brake system in which the tractor brakes are applied hydraulically by a master cylinder 9 and the trailer brakes by a vacuum system comprising a reservoir 19 and control valve 13. Until the vacuum force acting on a piston in the cylinder 8 has been overcome, the brake pedal part 1, 11, pivots about point 2 and operates the valve 13, thereby applying the trailer brakes first and avoiding the jack-knifing of the vehicles. Thereafter, the force on the piston in cylinder 8 having been overcome, the pedal pivots as a whole about point 4 and applies the tractor brakes by the master cylinder 9. The lostmotion connection 5, 6 prevents interference with the normal operation if the cylinder 8 is inoperative. In a modified arrangement described, the pedal actuates directly a master cylinder, the delivery from which passes straight to a relay valve operating the trailer brakes and also acts against a resisting piston, according to the invention, controlling the tractor brake regulating valve.
