Abstract

1,127,072. Fluid-pressure brakes. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 14 Sept., 1966 [17 Sept., 1965], No. 39754/65. Heading F2F. An hydraulic braking system for aroad vehicle, wherein there is provided a compressed-air servo, and which may be associated with a compressed-air trailer braking system, comprises dual hydraulic circuits 52, 61 supplying separate chambers 14, 15 of equal or approximately equal area in each of a set of brake cylinders 5-8, the circuits being fed by primary and secondary chambers 39, 48 of a tandem master cylinder 32, the primary piston 40 of which is actuated by a pair of air actuators 30, 31, or by a doublediaphragm actuator (Fig. 3, not shown), having a common output rod-34, control of the actuator(s) being by separate valves 64, .65 controlled by the pressure developed in a pedaloperated master cylinder 17 having separate reservoirs 26, 27 for the two hydraulic circuits, the latter supplying the circuit fed by the primary chamber 39 while the former supplies the circuit fed by the secondary chamber 48 via chamber 24 of the pedal-operated master cylinder. In the diagrammaticallyillustrated embodiment of Fig: 1, the pressure developed-in the pedal-operated master cylinder acts on a secondary piston 22 which in turn acts via a balance beam 76 on the stems 72 of the valves 64, 65, one of which can also be operated manually by handbrake lever 109. In the modification of Fig. 6, however, reaction pistons 134, 135 each comprising an hydraulic piston element 136 and a pneumatic piston element 137 exposed to hydraulic pressure in the chamber 24 and to pneumatic pressure delivered by the associated valve, respectively, are each provided with one valve seat 138 of a lapping valve assembly 138, 139, 141, rods 147 connected at their outer ends to a handbrake linkage engaging the pistons so that simultaneous manual application of the valves can also be effected. In both embodiments direct mechanical application of the valves can be effected in the event of failure of the hydraulic circuit including chamber 24, by contact of an extension rod 143 of the pedal-operated piston 19 engaging the secondary piston 22 or a bridging plate 144 contacting the reaction pistons 134, 135, respectively. The pneumatic system shown in Figure 1 includes three reservoirs 87, 88, 89 respectively supplying a trailer reservoir 91, via tractor protection valve 92 and relay / emergency valve 93, valve 64 and valve 65, the outputs of valves 64 and 65 supplying air circuits 103, 106 on the trailer in addition to the air actuators 30, 31 on the tractor. Circuit 103 feeds one chamber in each of the two-chamber, air brake actuators 78, 79 on the trailer wheels, by a direct connection,. circuit 106 feeding the other, chamber of each of these actuators. via the relay/emergency valve 93. Inertia valves 97, 101 associated, with. the reservoirs, 88, 89 cut off the. supply lines to. the valves 64, 65 when, a. predetermined deceleration is exceeded.
