Abstract
839,676. Fluid-pressure brakes. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. May 15, 1958 [May 16, 1957], No. 15689/58. Class 103 (1). [Also in Group XXIX] A valve C for controlling the trailer brakes of a tractor-trailer vehicle combination of the type described in Specification 726,760 comprises chambers 52, 54 separated by a diaphragm structure 60 and connected to a vacuum reservoir 28 and the trailer brake actuator valve B, respectively, and a valve 68 regulating the supply of air from atmosphere to the brake, actuated by a tubular sleeve valve 78 slidable in diaphragm 60 and connected to a piston 98 in a cylinder communicating by a pipe 44 with the brake master cylinder 10. The valve is shown in the lapped condition but normally, with the brakes off, diaphragm structure 60 is urged to the right against fixed abutments.90 by a spring 88 and the right-hand end of sleeve 78 is separated from a member 70 actuating air valve 68; in this condition control chamber 54 communicates with vacuum chamber 52 through the interior of sleeve 78 and ports 84. Upon making a brake application piston 98 moves sleeve 78 to the right, to seat against member 70 and cut off communication between chambers 52, 54, and then opens valve 68 to admit air to control chamber 54. Pressure builds up until the differential load across diaphragm 60 causes it to move to the left against the force of spring 88 and the valve takes up the lapped position. Movement of sleeve 78 to the left establishes communication between vacuum and control chambers 52, 54. Upon brake release a return spring 94 separates sleeve 78 from member 70 to restore communication between chambers 52, 54, thus eliminating the pressure differential across diaphragm 60 which is then returned to its position against abutments 90 by spring 88.
