Abstract

983,866. Compressed air brakes. KNORRBREMSE G.m.b.H. April 10, 1961 [April 9, 1960], No. 12858/61. Heading F2F. In a compressed-air braking installation for rail vehicles of the kind in which a reservoir 7 on each vehicle is maintained charged by a filling line 27 whenever the pressure therein is sufficient but can also be charged from a main line 1 via a relay valve 3 of known type during release of the brakes should the pressure in line 27 fall below the pressure in line 1, the relay valve controlling the supply of air to, and its release via an orifice 13 from, a brake cylinder 5, in accordance with the pressure in line 1, a further relay valve 17 is provided which controls a second orifice 19 whereby whenever the pressure in line 27 is less than the normal pressure in line 1 the orifice 19 is shut off to give a slow release, whereas when the pressure in line 27 is normal, the orifice 19 is connected in parallel with the orifice 13 to give a quick release. By this means it is ensured that reservoir 7 is always recharged when the brake is fully released. The normal pressure of the filling line 27 is arranged to be higher than the normal pressure in line 1, a pressure-reducing valve 39, incorporating a check valve, being interposed in the line connecting line 27 to the reservoir to prevent overcharging. The relay valve 17 comprises a piston 29, acted on in a direction by atmospheric pressure and a spring 23 to close a valve member 35 for shutting off the orifice 19, and in the other direction by the pressure of line 27 acting in chamber 25.
