Abstract

508,181. Fluid - pressure brakes for vehicles. KNORR-BREMSE AKT.-GES. Nov. 16, 1938, No. 33319. Convention date, Nov. 20, 1937. [Class 103 (i)] The braking pressure is temporarily increased when the driver's valve 1 is in the emergency position, the speed of the vehicle exceeds a predetermined value, and the brake cylinder pressure is at its normal maximum, by a valve 4 which disconnects the brake cylinder 6 from the auxiliary reservoir 8 and applies it to the supply pipe 10 or main reservoir in which a maximum pressure is constantly maintained, and restores the normal connection of the brake cylinder 6 with the auxiliary reservoir 8 when the speed falls below the predetermined value. The arrangement shown comprises a control valve 7 controlled by the pressure in the train pipe 9, and a replenishing valve 11 interconnecting the brake cylinder 6 auxiliary reservoir 8 and supply pipe 10. Air is supplied to the brake cylinder 6 through one side of a double check valve 5, the other side being normally open to atmosphere through the valve 4. The operating magnet of valve 4 is controlled by the contacts of a speed responsive switch 2, a switch 3 operated by the brake cylinder pressure, and a switch associated with the driver's valve and closed in the emergency position of the valve. When all three contacts are closed valve 4 is operated to apply the supply pressure to the double check valve 5 which disconnects the brake cylinder 6 from the auxiliary reservoir 8 and applies it to the supply pipe in which the pressure is greater. When the speed of the vehicle falls below the predetermined value, switch 2 opens its contacts, valve 4 is de-energized, and the double check valve 5 restores the normal connection of the brake cylinder with the auxiliary reservoir 8, so that the braking pressure is reduced to its normal value.
