Abstract

472,223. Fluid pressure brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 22, 1937, No. 5255. Convention date, Feb. 22, 1936. [Class 103 (i)] A brake cylinder control valve is subject to a controlling pressure variable by the driver's valve, also to the brake cylinder pressure, and also to the pressure of a fluid supplied to a chamber of the control valve by a relay valve controlled by the load on the vehicle. The brake cylinder 15 is supplied with fluid from a reservoir 4 by means of a control valve 6. The valve 6 is controlled by fluid supplied to a chamber 7 by a triple valve 2, or a driver's valve in the case of a straight air system, also by the brake cylinder pressure acting in the chamber 17, and also by fluid supplied to a chamber 29 from the triple valve 2 by a relay valve 40 influenced by the load carried by the vehicle. The relay valve 40 comprises a piston 43 on which seats an exhaust valve 49 connected to the inlet valve 52 and a plunger 51 on which acts a spring 54. The piston 43 is connected to the body and chassis of the vehicle by a link 57 and a rod 58. Fluid from the triple valve 2 passes through a pipe 31 past the inlet valve 52 and through the pipe 32 to the chamber 29 until a sufficient pressure is attained to depress the piston 43, which allows the inlet valve 52 to close. If the vehicle is empty the exhaust valve 49 will open and connect the chamber 29 to the atmosphere.
