Abstract

395,013. Fluid-pressure brakes. BROWN, D. F. and WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SAXBY SIGNAL CO., Ltd., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London. Jan. 4, 1932, No. 235. [Class 103 (i).] In pressure or vacuum brakes particularly for road trailers, first a rapid flow of fluid is caused to occur from a pressure reservoir to the brake cylinder or from the brake cylinder to a vacuum reservoir, in a second stage brake cylinder pressure is directly controlled by a driver's valve. Vacuum is normally maintained, by means of a pipe 3 to the induction pipe of the vehicle engine, in the main reservoir 2 on the tractor, pipe 7 and past the free edge of a diaphragm 31, in the auxiliary reservoir 24 on the trailer. The diaphragm 31 in the quick action valve 23 on the trailer maintains a valve 29 on its lower seat connecting the brake cylinder 22 of the trailer to the control pipe 6 which is normally connected to atmosphere through valve 11 of the driver's valve 1 on the tractor. Operation of the valve 1 to apply the brakes closes the valve 11 and opens the valve 12 to connect pipes 6, 7. Air thus passing to the pipe 7 causes the diaphragm 31 to raise the valve 29 on to its upper seat and connect the reservoir 24 to the brake cylinder 22 to apply the brakes rapidly. The subsequent reduction of pressure in the pipe 7 by flow of air to the main reservoir 2 and the increase of pressure above the diaphragm 31 returns the valve 29 restoring communication between the brake cylinder and the pipe 6 through which a further application graduated by the driver's valve 1 may be obtained. The driver's valve 1 is operated by means of a Bowden control 17, and gives a graduated application by means of a spring 16 and a piston 9. Check valves 18, 20 prevent flow of air from the main reservoir 2 and the induction pipe respectively to the pipe 7, except that a restricted byepass 19 allows the main reservoir to be evacuated. A spring loaded check valve 32 may be provided to ensure a definite reduction in the pipe 7. Restricted communication may be provided between the chambers on each side of the diaphragm 31. Automatic application of the trailer brake is obtained by the valve 23 if the trailer breaks away. A quick action valve 23 may be provided for the tractor brake cylinder.
