Abstract

926,265. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. Nov. 8, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1960], No. 41480/60. Class 135. [Also in Group XXXII] In a levelling valve for the air springs of a vehicle a lever 2 connected to the vehicle axle engages a piston 7 which actuates spring- loaded valves 10, 11, controlling air flow to opposite sides of a diaphragm 12 connected to a rod 15 co-operating with a spring-loaded disc valve 29 to control air flow to and from the air springs. When the axle deflects the lever 2 displaces the piston 7 which separates from one of the valves 10, 11 and lifts the other thereby connecting one side of the diaphragm 12 to exhaust through a passage 8 in the piston 7 and permitting air supplied by an inlet 31 through a check valve 28 arid a passage 32 restricted by choke screws 35, 36 to pressurize the other side of the diaphragm 12. During rapid displacements of the lever 2 resulting from road shocks the choke screws 35, 36 ensure that insufficient air is supplied to the diaphragm 12 to actuate the valve 29, but during slow displacements of the lever 2 resulting from changes in vehicle load the rod 15 is either displaced upwardly to open the valve 29 to supply air to the springs via an outlet 38 or downwardly to separate from the valve 29 to exhaust the springs through an axial passage 25 in the rod 15. A sealed piston may be substituted for the diaphragm 12.
