Abstract

A diaphragm-type load-responsive valve for an air pressure vehicle braking system has a two-stage valve assembly embodying main and pilot valve members 27, 25. The two-stage valve assembly is operable by a beam 3 the fulcrum of which is displaceable in accordance with variations in the vehicle load. A signal pressure from the brake valve introduced at inlet 60 is fed to the pilot valve, which is opened by signal pressure acting on the underside of diaphragm 12 (via passage 16), so that signal pressure passes to the outlet 30 to the brake actuator. The main valve 25 is supplied with full pressure air from a reservoir via inlet 18, but only opens when the signal pressure is greater than the brake actuator pressure by a certain amount (which varies with load) so as to call for the rapid delivery of a large volume of air. <IMAGE>
